Hello everyone!

My name is Olga Escamilla Marcos. This is my first time writing an article, wow, I feel so important! I do have to say that one of the desires of my heart was to write. I don’t know where to even start but I always feel good when I tell stories and notice that I get people to pay attention, as long as I go directly to the point with a sincere heart. This is my opportunity to become a famous writer, it’s a happy day for me!

If I’m going to be a famous writer I need to write about important issues, so guess who is the most important person in my life? God is and thanks to him I am where I have to be. First, allow me to introduce myself, I am a social communicator, a housewife who loves God, loves my family, is involved in sports, and is a simple lady born and raised in Houston, Texas. I have been living abroad for over 35 years and during my nostalgic moments I remember as a child going to a special Christian organization with my sister Linda, Godly people taught us unforgettable Bible stories. I can still remember the giant and a boy that hit him in the eye with his slingshot, do you happen to know his name? Also, I just remembered some good Samaritans in Magnolia Park during 1960 and 1970 that would show up for the Christmas holiday with gifts for all of the neighborhood children. I have to say the seeds were planted and honestly we need more people like them to serve God in today’s society. We need to remember that God knows every wrong and every right we commit and one day we will have to answer for all that we have done.

One day I told our eldest daughter that I needed to get a real job because I had been a housewife for over 25 years, I wanted to be self-employed, have my own business, my own income, and not depend on my husband to provide my needs. My daughter answered something very interesting, she said “Mom, remember you work for God”. She was right, I serve God, not people. I worked full-time for several oil companies, I spent many years volunteering for different organizations and I am part of a local lady’s club that supports orphans and needy children. I have other desires, one is to purchase my first diamond ring and to buy a Rolex, haha just kidding. I live in South America and it would be too risky to even wear expensive jewelry, plus I couldn’t see myself worried about taking care of my jewelry when so many people are worried about making enough money to eat for the day.

It’s not easy to talk about God in today’s society because most honor wealth, attractiveness, and success above wisdom. We live in a very busy and noisy world, but God has planted eternity in the human heart and we must do our best to meet and serve God. In the late 80s, I met God in South America, upon arrival I was hit with culture shock, I was young and I must have slept for about 2 years, devastated from being apart from my family and living overseas in a country my husband considered a paradise. But God had a plan, he’s so smart, I remember going through some really difficult times, in the late 80s it was not easy adjusting to the food and finding a place to live. All I can remember is getting on my knees and saying a simple prayer, I asked God to forgive my sins, for direction and wisdom, and some money to pay for our bills, and guess what!!!! He listened and listens to those that pray to him. The first thing that happened was we moved into a new house and it was so beautiful, it was small but perfect for our little family. Then came my need to practice my English, I got a job with an American oil company, and I felt I was forgetting my ability to speak and write properly with all the Spanish-speaking people around me. I then joined an English-speaking ladies' Bible study group. The meetings were only once a week and I knew I could handle that. I had never flipped through a Bible, nor opened one in my life, but everyone in the group was so eager to help me out that I had no time to be shameful because I was ready to learn. I wanted to learn to write Spanish in a proper way therefore, I had a job that required that I write in both languages but I had to teach myself. I couldn’t afford to go to school to learn, plus, after work I had to attend to my husband and children! I wanted to make sure I made it to the local gym as well. So, I started reading the Bible in Spanish, a popular version of the Bible “Dios Habla Hoy”, one that I stole from a hospital in Houston back in 1990. Every time I opened that Bible it reminded me it was wrong to steal or take things without permission. But in true honesty it became a treasure to me, it not only taught me to write proper Spanish but it taught me how much Jesus loves me and the world.

God has a special plan for your life too, don’t let your busy societal life take that joy away from you! If you ever feel the need for a higher power in your life, turn to God, if you’re driving to work or about to take a shower, that could be your special time with God. Try it, you have nothing to lose! God wants to have a personal relationship with you, with all of us. Once you find that quiet place and time to reach out to God, you can start reading a copy of the Holy Bible, most churches give out Bibles for free. It took me 25 years to learn about God in today’s society, how long will it take you?

The people most likely to gain wisdom are those who are willing to listen. Are you willing to listen? Are you willing to give time out of your day to honor God? It is a sign of strength, not weakness, to pay attention to what others have to say. People who are eager to listen continue to learn and grow throughout their lives. One thing I must add is that my mom was praying back in the days when I was too busy to talk or hear God, but God was there for me and he can be there for you too. My mom was such a Godly woman, she loved the church and she loved to take her children/grandchildren to hear the word of God.

"Colossians 3:23

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters…."
